Alleged hammer attacker remanded in custody

A 22-year-old man accused of bashing a man with a hammer during a robbery attempt at an Auckland jewellers has been remanded in custody.

Ora Neilson, of Mount Wellington, appeared in the Auckland District Court on Tuesday by video link.

He has been charged with aggravated wounding and shoplifting at Sylvia Park mall on May 26.

Neilson was accused of using a hammer to break glass display cases and making off with almost $40,000 worth of jewellery from the mall's Michael Hill store.

A worker from a nearby Vodafone store who stepped in was allegedly hit in the face with the hammer.

He needed more than 30 stitches, and has been recovering at home since the attack.

Neilson's lawyer Emma Priest said she was withdrawing a bail application, ahead of talks with her client.

Neilson would probably be in a position to enter a plea at his next appearance, she said.

He was remanded in custody until next week.
